Here’s the Writing 150 syllabus


Students in the 2017 class of the Professional Writing Minor, Multimedia Communication track, are working as interns in a range of fields.


Alexandra DeSanto is a Production and Marketing Intern at UCSB’s Pollock Theater, a state-of-the-art exhibition hall dedicated to presenting an international range of films and filmmakers. The Pollock Theater is a place where students and community members come together to screen films and engage in direct conversation with filmmakers, critics, and scholars. Alexandra’s duties include filming live Q&A shows for UCTV broadcasts, assisting with the planning and execution of theater events, and writing and proofreading event proposals, web content, administrative documents, brochures, and e-mail blasts. She also is currently helping the Theater Director redesign the theater’s website and make the transition from Drupal to WordPress.

Kirsten Mancini is a sales development representative at the start up technology company Graphiq. By using data from its knowledge graph, Graphiq is able to build embeddable, interactive visualizations for some of the top publishers including the Associated Press, Reuters, FORTUNE, AOL, Sports Illustrated, etc. Kirsten helps roll out their newest ad product, sponsored visualizations, and performs outreach to large brands in which Graphiq has the potential to create mutually beneficial relationships.

Michael Louie is currently the Content Marketing Intern at the business automation software company, Ontraport. Ontraport aims to aid business entrepreneurs with the behind-the-scenes logistics of growing a small company as well as strategic online marketing. Michael will be researching and developing content for Ontraport’s media channels. His time will culminate in a final project, most likely geared toward assisting in Ontraport’s annual business conference, Ontrapalooza.

Rachel Johnsen is a Marketing and Branding Intern in the Gaucho Sports Marketing program, a branch of UCSB Athletics that works to develop and execute sports marketing projects in order to improve fan attendance, enhance the UCSB athletics facilities, and cultivate a cohesive image and experience associated with Gaucho Athletics. Rachel performs innovative research in order to write and edit weekly e-mail blasts sent to community members using the software platform Jump Forward. She also utilizes Adobe Photoshop to develop advertisements, collateral and special projects for various sports and departments. Rachel is currently working on designing softball banners that will be used in the facility redesign at Campus Diamond, as well creating season ticket collateral for the upcoming men’s soccer season.

Sarah Chan is a Sales and Marketing Intern at Yardi, a real estate and property management software company based in Santa Barbara. Yardi offers business solutions for every real estate market, including multifamily, single family, office, industrial, military, retail, and more. Headquartered in Goleta, Yardi has expanded to over 30 offices and 6,000 employees worldwide and is one of the most established and recognized names in the market. Her responsibilities include writing content for the company blog, supporting inside sales by prequalifying potential clientele using the internal CRM database, cold calling company execs to introduce them to the Genesis product, fostering customer relationships through product expertise, and doing competitive research and SWOT analysis for the marketing department.

Erica Carnohan is a Content Marketing Intern at Graphiq, a data journalism company located in Summerland, California. In her role, she helps source images, format articles and help streamline several publishing processes. In addition to her role as a support for the Editorial team, she also assists Graphiq’s Original Research team by creating unique and interesting data methodologies for articles. The stories she helps create are syndicated to MSN, and several of her pieces have been on MSN’s homepage.

Sonia Wanninger is a Digital Marketing Intern at EOS Lounge, a popular nightclub located in downtown Santa Barbara, California. Her internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, promoting events on social media platforms, planning events, creating marketing content, and researching new marketing strategies and artists. Through this internship, Sonia will learn important marketing skills for the music industry specifically and how to effectively reach a target audience and incite them to come to music shows. The internship will also require her to fine-tune her promotional writing and design skills through creating digital content for marketing purposes. This position is unpaid and requires approximately 12 hours of work per week.

Dane Asato is a Marketing Intern at ProductPlan–a roadmap software company based in Santa Barbara. With ProductPlan, product managers can easily plan, visualize, and communicate their business strategy with their team through the creation of beautiful and informative roadmaps. While assisting the Marketing Team in various projects, Dane’s primary responsibilities include conducting market research, content marketing, email marketing, and managing social media. Dane looks forward to developing his business communication skills while working in this highly innovative tech company.

Social Media

Joseph Din is a Social Media Intern at MENTALiTY, Santa Barbara’s only Creative Advertising Agency for Television, Streaming, Films and Worthy Cause. MENTALiTY works with major clients such as NBC, CBS, FX, and Netflix on creating trailers to be broadcasted both on network television and in online formats. As Social Media Intern, primary tasks include polishing and aligning MENTALiTY’s existing social media pages, strategizing ways to promote the latest projects that MENTALiTY is working on, and occasional copywriting tasks as needed. Presently, Joseph is working on revamping MENTALiTY’s Facebook business page, generating a larger following for MENTALiTY’s Twitter page, and introducing MENTALiTY’s Instagram page. Through this internship, Joseph seeks to gain mentorship from the agency’s Founder and Creative Director, Tim O’Neil, in hopes of securing a position in Entertainment Advertising industry in the Los Angeles are upon graduation.


Kelsey Ferrara is the Head of Editorial at The Fox Magazine, an online and print magazine that is dedicated to showcasing the millennial lifestyle. This publication prominently features articles that relate to technology, photography, inspiration, music, travel, food, fashion, etc. It is Kelsey’s responsibility to proofread, edit and schedule all articles before they are published on the magazine’s website or in print editions. Kelsey also delegates articles to a team of editors, maintains the editorial calendar, and contributes to the creative direction of print issues.

Danielle Moss is a Contributing Writing and Editorial Intern at Santa Barbara Seasons magazine, a print magazine celebrating Santa Barbara county life and culture. As a Contributing Writer, Danielle’s foremost responsibility is to produce original print and digital content to be published by the magazine and online blog. Her additional responsibilities include writing to deadline, meticulously fact-checking and editing, and keeping the online calendar up to date.  Working directly under the Editor, will allow Danielle to learn about the thorough work that is required of any business hoping to create smart, accessible, persuasive and inspiring multimedia content. During her time at Seasons, Danielle is excited to grow her own portfolio.

Alison O’Brien is an Editorial Intern at Graphiq, a data visualization and semantic technology company whose mission is to instantly deliver insights from the world’s data. She writes and edits data-driven stories for many of Graphiq’s vertical search engines that are syndicated to publishing partners including AOL and MSN. Alison also collaborates with the publishing and product teams in brainstorms and content calendaring sessions.

Mallory Budesa is a Digital Copywriting Intern for Teva, a sandal-focused, yet style-branching shoe company based in Goleta, California. Working under the Digital Marketing Manager, Mallory’s duties include facilitating some of the brand’s many social media platforms in order to optimize them to their respected audiences in hopes of increasing engagement and web traffic. Mallory also works with the Marketing Team in brainstorming new campaign possibilities and influencer created content. In doing this, she uses many different web publishing and analytic tools in order to make sure her content is contributing to the brand’s success.

Shannon Trumbull is an Editorial and Design Intern for Starting Lines, a professional publication of students’ writing and photography. Shannon’s role as a Design intern is to produce the 2017-2018 annual publication ofStarting Lines. As part of the design team, Shannon will contribute her skills with photo editing and graphic design.
